The 30 mile route was very popular with the most taking part while a few riders chose the 10 mile route.
The ride departed from The Studio Heapham Road Industrial Estate and headed to Upton arriving in Upton.
The 10 mile route made a left turn riding through the village to return back to Gainsborough through Heapham.
The rest of the enthusiastic cyclist’s enjoyed the 30 mile route riding through Willingham by Stow, Stow, Sturton by Stow and Thorpe le Fallows. Arriving in Brattleby the rider’s pushed hard on their pedals for the big climb up the hill onto the Lincolnshire edge, the rider’s were rewarded with fantastic views over the Trent valley as they progressed along Middle Street.
Arriving at Glentworth the riders headed down hill then across country to the edge of Upton, returning to Gainsborough past Hewitt’s Windmill. The route then retraced the outward ride along Heapham Road finishing back in Gainsborough.
An enjoyable ride through some of Lincolnshire’s finest countryside, the country lanes were full of flora and wild life.

Air Ambulance Ride 11th June 2023
Gainsborough’s Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Cycle Ride attracted riders from a wide age range. This year we welcomed a group from Cycling UK Louth. The event was part of National Bike Week and was arranged by Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club, Cycling UK Gainsborough and Gainsborough Cycles.
In past years there's been a mix of showers, chilly weather and sunshine. Today would be a true summer’s day with largely clear sunny skies and a predicted maximum temperature of 27 Degrees Celsius.
Heading off along Heapham Road at 10.30 am, Dan ably led the group through the outskirts of the town and we were soon in open country overlooking the Trent Valley as we passed through Upton.
Next came the string of ‘Stow’ villages; Willingham by Stow, Normanby by Stow and Sturton by Stow. The rather fine Saxon Minster in Stow itself (partly built under the patronage of Leofric, Lord of Mercia, and his wife, Lady Godiva!) looked resplendent in the sunshine. The name stōw is Old English meaning a holy place.
From Stow we’d head along the attractive Till valley through Thorpe in the Fallows to Brattleby with its connection to the former first world war Royal Flying Corps air station. The church of St Cuthbert has memorials to aircrew of both word wars from those serving at RFC Brattleby Cliff and RAF Scampton.
Continuing up the steep escarpment to the Lincoln Edge (the steepest climb of the ride) splendid views emerged of the Trent Valley. We wouldn’t have time to visit RAF Ingham Visitors Centre (Ingham was home to the Polish Air Force Bomber squadrons) and we’d soon be descending the newly resurfaced road at Glentworth and then along narrow wooded lanes with its twists and turns.
With a strengthening backwind we were soon to arrive at Sturgate Airfield for welcome refreshment and we’d all enjoy a pleasant chat whilst watching the arrival and departure of light aircraft.
By now, it was starting to feel very warm as temperatures had indeed risen to 27 degrees. A final leg took us through Heapham and past Hewitts Windmill which is a non-working but renovated Tower mill (the four sails still to be replaced).
Event organisers Trevor Halstead and Daniel Nicholson would like to thank all the riders who took part.

Air Ambulance Ride 9th June 2024
Cycling UK Gainsborough’s Ride Leaders Trevor Halstead and Dan Nicholson greeted various members from across the region for the annual charity ride to raise funds for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
Today would end up rather chilly with a top temperature of about 14 Degrees Celsius and just a few sunny breaks in the largely cloudy skies. Having assembled for a number of photo calls, we departed Morrisons Supermarket a little after 10.30 am.
A strong westerly allowed a speedy outbound ride, the bunch having split up into a number of smaller groups with Tim and Rob at times riding by themselves. Onwards through the ‘Stow’ villages; Stow itself the most impressive boasting a Saxon Minster, partly built under the patronage of Leofric, Lord of Mercia, and his wife, Lady Godiva! The name stōw is Old English meaning a holy place.
More notably today there would be an association with aviation.
Firstly, the village of Brattleby and its connection to the former first world war Royal Flying Corps air station. The village church of St Cuthbert has memorials to aircrew of both world wars from those serving at RFC Brattleby Cliff and RAF Scampton.
We’d finally reach the airfield having climbed up the steep escarpment to the Lincoln Edge. RFC Brattleby was short lived (1916-17) before reopening in 1936 as RAF Scampton.
With great views to the Trent Valley all along the chalk escarpment we’d shortly arrive at the Polish Bomber Squadrons Centre at the former RAF Ingham. The Centre officially opened less than couple of months ago and was open today but sadly there wasn’t time to visit on this occasion. Well worth a return visit to learn more of the fascinating history of the Polish Squadron’s endeavours, the airfield operational between 1940 and 1946.
Before long a steep descent at Glentworth and a fine ride crossing the River Till. Trevor later remarked that the route crossed the river three times, the Till having its origin at a spring line in Gainsborough.
A stop at Sturgate Airfeld between Upton and Heapham was very welcome having struggled into the strong headwind for a number of miles. Refreshments were enjoyed by a number of riders. This former RAF station was one of the last to be built in WWII not opening until March 1943, initially under the control of Hemswell and Bomber Command.
Thus, completing a ‘tour’ of former RAF stations.
The ride then progressed past Hewitt’s Windmill before retracing the outward ride along Heapham Road and finishing back in Gainsborough.
Following the Charity Ride, cyclists from around the Gainsborough area packed their tea time goodies onto their cycles and pedalled to Richmond Park in Gainsborough, to take part in Gainsborough’s National Bike Week Pedalling Picnic.
The event organisers Trevor Halstead and Daniel Nicholson would like to thank Gainsborough Town Council for the use of Richmond Park and Gainsborough’s Mayor Ken Woolley for attending and all the riders who took part in the Charity Ride.

Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Presentation Evening 4th November 2024.
A Presentation Evening was held at Saint Georges Hall in Gainsborough on 4th November 2024 to hand over a cheque and awards, thanking people for the work done for a notable charity.
The magnificent sum of £2,520 has been raised for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance throughout 2024 in the Gainsborough area with a cycle ride and donated cycles sold through Recycle Auctions and Gainsborough cycles. Trevor
Halstead, the owner of Gainsborough Cycles, Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club and Cycling UK Gainsborough started raising funds in the year 2000 and to date, £32,765 has been collected.
Cycling UK Gainsborough National Bike Week coordinators Trevor Halstead & Daniel Nicholson welcomed Anthony Hubbard and Lenny Lennox who represented The Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. The Mayor of Gainsborough Ken
Woolley, who was a paramedic at the start of the Air Ambulance 30 years ago and Thirza Dixon who was in at the start of fund raising over 30 years ago, along with Anthony and Lenny spoke of their involvement with the charity.
Thank you to sponsors Trevor Halstead, Rachel & Daniel Nicholson and Ben and Carol Bowser of Recycle Auctions who made the evening possible. Cycling UK Lincolnshire Chair Tim Newbery was also present.

The Colin Smith Memorial Shield has been awarded to Gainsborough Aegir Cycling Club member Maxine Downes for raising £430 in sponsorship.
The Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Charity celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. A helicopter and crew landed at the scene of a road traffic collision near Market Rasen on 30th October 2024 marking the 30,000TH mission, all
made possible because of the support of people living and working in the communities of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Current costs for a 24/7 service is £13 million a year with no direct Government funding. Each mission is estimated at about
£500 so that the donation of £2,520 is significant.
Many thanks to all who supported and helped.
